In
Catullus poems, Lesbia has been mentioned a lot of times. Here we bring up with
a question what is the relationship between Lesbia and Catullus? As we go through
the poem written by Catullus it is easy to tell that he is in love with Lesbia
who left him. Despite the fact that Lesbia left Catullus he is still in great
love.
In
poem 5 value the lot at no more than a farthing!” The reason why he has
emphasized this way is that because Lesbia is well known to the others also,
their relationship has been criticized by the people. He wanted to tell from
this that he does not care what is been said about their relationship and
rather he explains that there is not enough time to love why spend time to care
about other people. For example, he says “for us, though, once our brief life’s
quenched, there’s only one unending night that’s left to sleep through.” And then
he shows his endless love towards Lesbia through “a thousand kisses, then a
hundred, then a thousand more, a second hundred, then yet another thousand then
a hundred” showing infinite number kisses that he wants from her and yet wants
more. He continues on Poem 7 expressing how much love he is into her. He saids “all
those stars that in the silent night look down on the stolen loves of mortals”
are the “number of times I need to kiss you, that’s what would satisfy your mad
Catullus.”
However,
in Poem 8, we can tell that Lesbia was not loving Catullus as much as he was
into her. It says that “things that you wanted, things she didn’t quite turn
down.” Catullus is acting as if he is ok with the fact that Lesbia is leaving
him as “she said No, so you too, feeble wretch, say No……so goodbye, sweetheart.
Now Catullus will hang tough, won’t ask, “Where is she?” won’’t, since you’ve
said No.” But as the poem moves on Catullus shows that he is still in love with
Lesbia and does not want her to leave him. For instance, he keeps asking “who’ll
now pursue you, still admire you ro your looks? Whom will you love now?” and so
on to look like he is tough and ok but really he cannot stop thinking about
her.
